Have you, like so many of us, had those pangs of fear and feelings of insecurity about your life recently? (I actually don’t know anyone who hasn’t.) Not to worry, honest. For the problem is not really about the economy, trying to keep up, please the boss, find a job, balance the checkbook, learn the latest technology, or stop local street fighting, shootings, or wars over which we have little or no control. Those things are all about the condition of life that surrounds us. What we can control, however, is the world within us. Which is where change begins, our lives take on a whole new way of being, and amazing results are created.
This is not to say avoid your feelings, or engage in Pollyanna thinking. If you feel fear, let it come, share it with a trusted friend, then get back to the business at hand: your thoughts and your underlying beliefs. In spite of how you were brought up, how you were conditioned (or as some say “domesticated”), and what you were taught, little of that may actually be true. It is true, however, that you are totally responsible for what you experience. Thoughts and beliefs, no matter whether they are true or based on misinformation, assumptions, or rules you make up, create your choices and actions which do lead to results─ just not the ones you might want.
So you might as well take charge of your mind, take charge of your actions, take charge of your choices, and take charge of your attitude. By allowing life to run its course, you are actually choosing to not take charge, so you are still in control (and in charge). Start again: the past is over. Make the shift by becoming more aware of your thoughts, standing up for the beliefs you want to empower, and going forward from there. So, to answer the question, here is where SECURITY begins and resides: within you!
Self-appreciation and gratitude
Education, awareness, and learning
Competence in work and doing what you love
Understanding others and their needs
Relationships – networks and support
Intuition and inner knowing as your Guide
Trust and confidence in the future
Yearning to contribute and be of service
While Security is an “inside job” so to speak, it is often useful to have “outside” assistance, as in books, friends to share concerns with, or a coach to work through. My recent book, Take Charge of Your Life – Seven Steps for Reclaiming Your Personal Power takes you step by step through the process of becoming a master of your life, not at the effect of it.
